Unauthorized Disclosures

A Navy Memoir of the 1980’s

Book Description:

In the winter of 1980, Rod Haynes was broke and all but homeless on the streets of Seattle. Six months later, on a sunny parade field at the Newport Rhode Island Navy Base, the author accepted his commission as an officer in the United States Navy. His remarkable 10-year journey took him around the world including Guantanamo Bay, Italy, Beirut, Israel, and France. This honest, engaging narrative shares Hayne's journey of self-discovery as the Cold War was ending.

About the Author:

After retiring from a 30-year career with the federal government in January 2024, I’ve embraced my lifelong passions: photography, nonfiction writing, and teaching history. My wife and best friend, Daria, and I share our home in Bellingham, Washington, with Bentley, our ever-entertaining "Wonder Dog."

In the Spring of 1974, at age 18, I embarked on an incredible journey, traveling through all 48 continental United States by Greyhound bus. That adventure became a cornerstone of my youth. As a commissioned officer in the United States Navy during the 1980s, I served in challenging locations in the U.S. and overseas, including Guantanamo Bay, Beirut, Lebanon, and the Mediterranean. My new memoir, Unauthorized Disclosures, chronicling my 10-year Navy experiences, will be released next spring. Fair warning: this book is not your average collection of memories and lessons learned. I am amazed I am still here today.
